The Thailand Education (“ED”) Visa is a non-immigrant, long-term visa (initially 90 days, extendable up to 1 year or more) for foreigners pursuing full-time studies, internships, or training in recognized institutions. It requires a letter of acceptance from a school/university and approval from the Ministry of Education.
Key Details for the Thailand ED Visa
- Purpose: Studies, language learning (Thai/English), Muay Thai, diving, university degrees, or internships.
- Validity & Extensions: Initially issued for 90 days. It is extendable every 90 days at local immigration offices for the duration of the course (usually 12-15 months).
- ED Plus Visa: For university students (bachelor’s or higher), this allows multiple re-entries without a permit and a one-year extension after graduation
- Requirements:
- Passport with at least 6 months validity.
- Letter of acceptance from a school or university recognized by the Thai Ministry of Education.
- Proof of sufficient funds (e.g., bank statement).
- Completed application form.
- Application Process:
- From outside Thailand: Apply at a Thai Embassy or Consulate in your home country.
- From inside Thailand: It may be possible to convert a tourist or other visa to an ED visa at an immigration office (if sufficient time remains).
- Important Rules:
- If you leave Thailand during your stay, you must obtain a re-entry permit to avoid canceling your visa.
- You must report to immigration every 90 days.
Common Uses
- Language Schools: Learning Thai, English, or Japanese.
- Higher Education: Universities or international schools.
- Specialized Training: Muay Thai boxing gyms, diving schools, or vocational training.
It is highly recommended to secure a school that is officially recognized by the Ministry of Education, as they will provide the necessary paperwork for the visa application.
